Cells: Homeostasis Superstars

How can one explain the ways cells contribute to the function of living organisms?   How do organisms live and grow?
Cells resources

Cell Membranes

How do cells maintain a stable internal environment despite changes outside their environment?  How does the cell membrane restrict the exchange of substances?  What are some functions of membrane proteins?  What determines the direction in which  transport occurs? Why is osmosis important?

Energy Unit:
(Photosynthesis and Cell Respiration are in a relationship)

How does photosynthesis turn light energy into chemical energy for the cell?  How does cell respiration turn food into energy for the cell?  Explain how matter cycles between aerobic and anaerobic conditions.  How does C cycle around the environment and what is the role of photosynthesis and cell respiration in it?

CELL REPRODUCTION:
When too much is a bad thing

What is the role of cell reproduction in the overall maintenance of an organism?
How can cell differentiation help a complex organism develop from a single cell?

Inheritance

Make a claim based on evidence that inheritable genetic variations may result from mutations caused by meiosis, mutations, and environmental factors. Can you  use statistics to predict inheritance patterns.

Beyond Genetics: Epigenetics

How to make genetically modified organisms.  How DNA from one organism can be inserted into bacteria to make proteins. Defend a claim based on evidence that inheritable genetic variations may result from mutations caused by environmental factors.

Homeostasis

Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems that provide specific functions within multicellular organisms.  Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence that feedback mechanisms maintain homeostasis.

Evolution

How can there be so many similarities among organisms yet so many different plants, animals, and microorganisms? Can you  demonstrate understanding of how multiple lines of evidence contribute to the strength of scientific theories of natural selection and evolution.
